South Florida firms show building designs in 3-D When Ralph Tapanes graduated from architecture school at the University of Miami a decade ago, he didn't take the conventional career route. Instead of designing buildings, he chose to make renderings and animations of them. Around the same time, a similar idea was brewing in the minds of a trio of young architects working at Florida International University. During lunch breaks at Taco Bell, Eddie Leon, Kevin Smith and Johann Beckford conceived an architectural animation company of their own -- Spine3d.

“Outsourcing is not a new phenomenon,” says Eddie Leon, president and CEO of Spine3D. The architectural visualisation firm has outsourced for several years and now maintains a studio in China. “Manufacturing industries have done this for decades, and the IT industry has also done this successfully. NASCAR fan website, GEICOgarage.com, was recently launched using 3D environments and live-action compositing by Spine3D. This immersive website allows fans to virtually tour an exact 3d replica of the GEICO NASCAR garage.
